I wrote on 22 march about biblical girl names. Today I found a surprising nugget of information regarding the name Hyacinth. Most websites such as behindthename, and babynamer will list this solely as a male name. However many others recognise it as having a male origin. Indeed the Roman Catholic Saint Hyacinth is quite clearly male.
Is it perhaps in the meaning, which most websites that deal with biblical boy names (or biblical girl names) will list the name as being linked to the flower. It isn't mentioned in the Christian Bible which of course is often used as the reference for many ancient names both of tribes and individuals.
Of course it is not alone in being a name which has changed gender through the ages and perhaps it was just a "trend" or "fashion" and the gender stuck.
